Fall 6-Week Adult Beginners Course

Start your practice with this step-by-step, six-week introductory Aikido course.  The class meets Sundays from 3:00 - 4:00 pm.  

The goal of the beginners course is to give participants a chance to experience Aikido first-hand and to provide them the skills needed to continue in the general classes. 

The cost of the course is $95 per person, and anyone ages 12 and older is welcome. For younger students, learn more about our kids program.

Waterfall Misogi at Diana's Baths

Join us for our fourth annual Columbus day trip to Diana's Baths to perform waterfall misogi (purification practice). Enjoy a short hike out to the falls, have lunch on the rocks and get ready to step under a frigid mountain stream!

Friends and family are welcome. We will meet at the Exit 9 Park & Ride in Dover at 9am and carpool up from there.

Claude Berthiaume Seminar

Portsmouth Aikido is honored to host Claude Berthiaume, 7th dan, Shihan, for the first time. He is a Board Member of the United States Aikido Federation and a member of its Technical Committee.

Berthiaume Shihan studied closely with his mentor, Mitsunari Kanai Shihan, for many years. He founded Aikido De La Montagne in 1989, and is the head of the Kiyoikaze Iaido Federation.

Join us for our eighth annual seminar with Yoshi Shibata, chief instructor of the UC Santa Cruz Aikido Dojo.

  • Friday evening from 4-7pm will be calligraphy.
  • Saturday from 10am-noon and 2:30-4:30pm will be Aikido.
  • Sunday from 10am-noon will be weapons.

Seminar with Stephane Janczuk & Maya Mucha

Join us for our first seminar with Stephane Janczuk, 6th dan and Chief Instructor of Aikido La Forge, and Maya Mucha, Aikido 5th dan, 6th dan Judo.

Janczuk Sensei started Aikido in Warsaw, Poland in 1984. He has studied with many excellent instructors including Moriteru Ueshiba Doshu and Seiichi Sugano Shihan. Since meeting Mitsunari Kanai Shihan, he has studied closely with him and his students, including Claude Berthiaume Shihan, for whom he moved to Montreal to continue his practice of Aikido and Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido (sword). 

Mucha Sensei started her martial art study in Warsaw, Poland in 1982 with Judo,  followed a year later by Aikido. She has studied with a variety of instructors, including Moriteru Ueshiba Doshu, Nobuyoshi Tamura Shihan, and Seiichii Sugano Shihan. In 1993 she met Mitsunari Kanai Shihan and Claude Berthiaume Shihan, and later moved to Montreal to continue her practice of Aikido and Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido (sword) with them. In 2005 she resumed her Judo practice with Hiroshi Nakamura Sensei. She has received gold medals in several provincial tournaments and has been the national champion in Judo kata since 2012. She represented Canada  in the World Judo Kata Championship in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Kangeiko & In-House Seminar

Kangeiko & In-House Seminar

Take your training to the next level with a week of kangeiko (intensive cold-weather training). For this special event, participants commit to training every day for a week in the middle of New England's coldest weather. 

The week culminates with an in-house seminar taught by our resident yudansha: Judy Ringer, Zach Nobel, Mardi Kidwell, and Doug & Sylwia Willcox. The seminar is free of charge and  will run from 10am to 2pm, followed by a potluck celebration.

As an added bonus, members who complete the week-long training will receive a custom calligraphy by Yuka Cass to celebrate their hard work and dedication. Members interested in participating should let Chief Instructor Aaron Cass know by email that they intend to complete the week.

The schedule will run as follows:

  • Sunday 1/28 - 4-5:15pm
  • Monday 1/29 - 5-6:30am (morning)
  • Tuesday 1/30 - 7-8:30pm
  • Wednesday 1/31 - 4:30-6pm
  • Thursday 2/1 - 7-8:30pm
  • Friday 2/2 - 5-6:30am (morning)
  • Saturday 2/3 - 10am-2pm followed by presentation of calligraphies and potluck party

Seminar with Hal Lehrman

Join us for this special seminar with Hal Lehrman, 7th Dan, Shihan.

Lehrman Sensei has studied Aikido under Yoshimitsu Yamada Sensei and other talented instructors since 1963. In 1976, Lehrman Sensei began teaching in Brooklyn where he now runs Aikido of Park Slope.

We're excited to be hosting Lehrman Sensei for the first time, and we hope you can join us for the seminar.
